This chapter looks at the social significance of sport and leisure in Northern Ireland from a number of perspectives. The themes that will be explored in an attempt to provide original insights are the symbolic importance of sport and leisure spaces, the relationship between 'national' teams and national identities and the idea of 'new fandom'. The nation state is a legalistic device. It applies to sovereign states that may or may not correspond to nationhood. The hybrid identity makes it perfectly consistent to play rugby, and other sports, for Ireland whilst defending the union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Problems relating to exclusivity and sporting space were recognised by the advisory group that was set up in 2000 to assist the Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure. The overwhelming majority of sports that are played in Ireland are organised on an island-wide basis.
