The introduction sets out the objectives of the book: to interweave a history of what happened to women who participated in the War of Independence after 1962 with an examination of how these female veterans (mujahidat) have constructed, mobilised or marginalised their memories of the anti-colonial conflict at different points across the same period. The study of both post-independence history and the place of memory within this history will in turn provide insights into how these women participated in or related to the language and practical tasks of state-building and nation-building. The introduction locates this study in the existing wider literature on commemoration, the construction of narratives of the past in the present and the relationship between discourse and lived experience. The introduction also discusses how time is experienced by interviewees and sets out some of the terminology.
