From Sleepy Hollow to Silent Hill
American gothic to globalgothic
Abstract only

Tracing the development, rise and decline of American gothic and the overlapping transition to a globalgothic in which America is but a part leads the author to discuss two canonical, antebellum-era American gothic texts. The author also discusses one contemporary instance with close ties to these, concluding with a final example of a globalgothic 'America' made in Japan. Washington Irving made 'Sleepy Hollow' an exception that proved the 'rule', the popular myth that endures to this day: that America lacks the history necessary for cultural production. Following Team Silent's disbandment in 2004, Silent Hill has gone on to become a truly global transmedia franchise. Silent Hill's first film adaptation, an American-French-Canadian-Japanese co-production, has been followed by a succession of games by American and European external developers.
