This chapter presents a series of critical reflections on Zygmunt Bauman's diagnosis and critique of postmodernity, with regard to some of the ideas he now groups under the umbrella of a critique of liquid modernity. Bauman was one of the earliest of post-Second World War sociologists to put the critique of consumerism at the heart of his diagnosis of the problems of life in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. For this he deserves credit and praise. The chapter offers a brief comment on Bauman's category of 'flawed consumers'. It explains the manner in which issues of race and gender are side-lined by Bauman, although in this case the question of class in its relation to gender is also important as a missing dimension. An important related issue addressed by Bauman, in In Search of Politics especially, is the collapsing trust in political institutions.
