This chapter considers some of the conceptual challenges linked to the concept of identity and to defining a single European identity. It provides an overview of how the European Union's (EU's) executive, the European Commission, tends to approach European identity. The chapters illustrate the presence and strengths of European identity/ies across various policy and academic perspectives. It sheds light on the ideals of European identity as set out by the European Commission, using discursive evidence. Using discursive evidence, the chapter reveals that while the European Commission has recognised the legitimising role European identity has for the EU as an emerging political community, it has failed to adopt a consistent approach to this issue. Finally, the chapter attempts to bring together the different theoretical and elite-led approaches to European identity/ies and draws attention to the aforementioned elements of European identity.
