Europeanisation and Russia

The process of Europeanisation has been a substantial component of Russian political and economic life. This chapter first summarises Russian literature on Europeanisation/EU-isation. It then turns to the past Europeanisation of Russia and contrasts it to the present processes of EU-isation. The chapter examines Russian policy towards EU-isation through the distinctions between Russia's past Europeanisation and present EU-isation, between instrumental and normative EU-isation. The distinction between instrumental and normative EU-isation has consequences for the shared neighbourhood. Russia has tried to limit any independent EU-isation of the countries in the region, promotes technical and pragmatic alignment in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and argues for the eventual instrumental EU-isation of the EEU and its members. The chapter argues that Russia rejects normative EU-isation but pursues instrumental EU-isation, in line with Moscow's historical experience of Europeanisation. Finally, it demonstrates that in the shared neighbourhood.
