Value-oriented aspects of EU-isation
the case of the Balkans
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

The Balkans is an area noted for complex ideas of entrenched nationalism operating in an environment lacking traditional identity-based boundaries. The notion of 'Europeanising' states, groups and even individuals is most often discussed in the framework of political and economic processes aimed at states ultimately 'adapt[ing] European Union (EU) rules'. This chapter aims to extend the discourse on value-oriented aspects of EU-isation on Balkan identity formation, adhering to a constructivist analytical framework. A key facet of EU-isation is to create, promote and more importantly sustain a sense of a pan-European identity. Efforts aimed at transforming an identity can be conceptualised within the EU's normative power. It should be recognised that the process of transformation, especially of value-oriented components such as identity, will require considerable time and the level of success will vary from country to country, as evidenced by the examples of Serbia and Croatia.
