Europeanisation and language borders
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

This chapter explores European Union/Eastern neighbourhood relations in the area of languages and language policies, with a focus on processes of Europeanisation and the reinforcement of European identity. It covers the issues related to language management. The chapter demonstrates the importance of language practices, beliefs about language varieties, and the impact of Europeanisation on language in the Eastern neighbourhood. Within the European neighbourhood particular languages may be considered as 'neighbour languages' on pure linguistic terms as a category that avoids the choice between 'foreign languages' and 'dialects' while recognising the closeness and proximity at hand. The chapter also explores the aspects of language shifts and the potential for frustrations and frictions over language issues in the near neighbourhood, comparing it to issues about language and multilingualism within the European Union.
