The royal tour illuminates how contemporary British and Portuguese colonial projects were continuously clashing in words, theory and ambitions. In 1907 Prince Luís Filipe departed Lisbon for a tour of the Portuguese colonies in Africa, as well as South Africa and Rhodesia. A 1905 trip by William Cadbury to São Tomé and Angola to investigate labour recruitment created considerable negative international publicity. The royal tour was intended to challenge these findings; the conflict was one of the 'tensions of empire. A revolt by plantation workers in São Tomé, a few days before the arrival of the royal party, remains one of the most striking incidents from the tour, as revealed in a collection of contemporary telegrams. In contemporary documents, the most cited event of the Mozambican tour was the batuque, the 'drumming', in reference to the action of many hands playing drums and the impressive sound they made.
