Sisters as one soul in two bodies

Catherine Breillat has made no secret of the fact that, in creating A ma soeur!. Of the two sisters, Anais is of course the 'fat girl'. While some viewers have blamed the international distributors of Breillat's film for giving its title. It is important to note that Fat Girl was in fact Breillat's original title, before French audiences at test screenings reacted negatively to it due to its foreignness and its harshness on the subject of weight. It is interesting to see how the contrast between a rebellious Anais and a more conformist Elena played itself out in Breillat's own relationship with her sister Marie-Helene. Breillat returned to the themes of female adolescence, sexuality and shame in Sex Is Comedy, a part-fiction, part-documentary film on the making of A ma soeur!.
