This chapter assesses the creative and arts-based aspects of an interdisciplinary, non-formal initiative at the University of Cape Town. It begins with some background information to the programme in order to situate it within the university and its mission of community outreach and social responsibility. The chapter focuses on 'Global debates, local voices' and in particular the creative and arts-based aspects of the course designed and facilitated by Astrid. It argues that the popular education approach improved both the process of building students' critical insight and their ability to translate understanding into appropriate action with the potential to take a commitment to social justice. The chapter interrogates the value of arts-based education, changing the programme may threaten some of the positive outcomes recorded in the two years' evaluations. It explores how a holistic, interdisciplinary education can mobilise the imagination of learners towards formulating alternatives, and lifelong moral and responsible actions.
