This chapter highlights how biographical details can develop a reader's/viewer's understanding of particular aspects of Paul Abbott's craft. Abbott's status as a showrunner demarcates a tone, sensibility and voice that are so clearly identifiable, so distinct, that his creations, writings and productions express his personality. Aged 23, Abbott was taken on by Granada as a story editor on Coronation Street. When he originally conceived Children's Ward as a drama set in a children's home, Abbott was advised by the future executive producer of the series, David Liddiment, to change the landscape of the drama. Children's Ward went on to attain critical acclaim, continuing for 11 years and winning a Royal Television Society Award in 1995 for Best Children's Drama. Abbott's Cracker was a psychological drama and a series that exuded darkness in its emotional twists and aphotic narrative.
