This chapter argues that although the European Union can be seen in many ways above all else it stands for the fostering and flourishing of peace. It explores the historical context in Europe, including the Thirty Years War, the destruction at the end of the Second World War, and the events of 1989. It explains the concept of soft power, arguing that there is no easy way to peace.
