The world on fire …
Pyrodramas at Belle Vue Gardens, Manchester, c. 1850–1950
Abstract only

The pyrodramas were a sign to the working classes that there was vibrant, stimulating, edifying free entertainment well into the evening, the spectacle easily viewable from the new outdoor dancing platform. Belle Vue Gardens were opened in 1836 on a tract of Gorton Land, some sixty acres in all, acquired by John Jennison. George Danson and Mr Bruce accompanied Jennison on his return to Manchester, and in May 1852 Belle Vue audiences saw the first of more than eighty annual pyrodramas. If Britain's opponents of northern European extraction are white and fair, Belle Vue audiences are invited to consider anti-imperialistic views. The setting for The Battle of Omdurman was used on 18 November 1899 for a 'grand torchlight military tattoo and sham fight' performed by the second battalion of the Manchester Regiment.
