This chapter examines the political rationalities, expertise, and techniques of government involved in the emergence of mental recovery in England. It provides a brief account of the historical antecedents of contemporary recovery and analyses the psychosocial turn of the treatment of mental illness in England. The changing conception of mental illness is perhaps most clearly reflected in the new medical understanding of schizophrenic persons. The recovery approach towards mentally ill individuals is found both within and outside the clinical setting. Recovery seems to have gained a foothold within the treatment of mental illness, along with changes in both diagnostic and curative practices. The chapter then moves on to account for some of the actual programmes and techniques employed in recovery treatment.
