How did Bauman and I come to work together? This chapter uses my archives to trace first contact, via my first review of his work in 1988 and our work together on Thesis Eleven, and then opening a personal relationship in Leeds. We established an annual routine of connection via these visits over a 20-year period following on my trips to the United States for the American Sociological Association (ASA) annual proceedings. We were both committed to the promise of sociology. My interest in Bauman was part of an opening to East European critical theory, outside the Frankfurt–Paris axis. This takes us back to my own intellectual beginnings and formation, and to the remarkable years of my time at La Trobe University, where much of this work took place.
