Our relationship peaked in the second decade and the new century. I published six books on Bauman, including a monograph on his work, the Bauman Reader and a four-volume collection of works on Bauman. Our friendship became more intense and yet easy, boosted by friendships with others around him, such as his daughter Lydia, and Keith Tester. We came routinely to exchange ideas, books and essays and enthusiasms, such as for the work of Castoriadis. I introduced Bauman to the work of my previous subject, the Australian art historian Bernard Smith. Our intellectual affinities grew stronger, complicated by the emergence of the idea of liquid modernity.
