What were the concordances between Bauman’s work and my own? Less than might have been expected – at least, in the most direct sense. Bauman thought of ours as affinities, and we shared enthusiasms for various ways of thinking, including hermeneutics, critical theory and structuralism. We also had shared commitments to the projects of socialism and culture. We both engaged in the critique of labourism and then New Labour in our respective locations. We may have been different kinds of antipodeans, or, at least, we both felt ourselves to be multiply located. We seemed both to remain aligned to the value systems suggested by Western Marxism, leading into the fields of culture and socialism.
