My work on and with the Australian art historian Bernard Smith was a precondition for my work on Bauman, and, in turn, grew from my earlier work on Trotsky. In the beginning, my relationship with Bauman was textual. I wanted to help establish what he had come to say. This resulted in a kind of triangle between Smith, Bauman and me; Bauman was keen to join in, even though his and Smith’s interests and competences were rather different. For Bauman was always also interested in creativity, and art, as well as in the world system of imperialism. This meant that he was engaging more explicitly with my own work, and not only me with his. The transactions were also mutual. There was cultural traffic between us, too.
