In ‘“My heart is satisfied’: revenge, justice and satisfaction in The Spanish Tragedy’, Eonjoo Park reveals how the notion of emotional satisfaction has been an overlooked generic feature of revenge tragedy—a feature that crucially defines how plays like The Spanish Tragedy understand the relationship between revenge and justice. Indeed, Park argues, with his infamously bloody ‘play within a play’, Kyd’s protagonist realizes a close link between the artistic manifestation of vengeance and emotional satisfaction; this attachment gives rise to a particular type of justice, not adequately captured by the conventional language of retributive justice, which may be called ‘aesthetic’.
