This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book demonstrates that, both in terms of the innovative qualities of the work and the influence he has exerted on other film-makers and artists, Alain Robbe-Grillet's contribution to the cinema deserves the same degree of critical attention as that accorded to his novels. It is as chef de file of the French New Novel movement that Robbe-Grillet came to public attention in the 1950s, his first novel, Les Gommes. The films he made in the 1970s and 1980s both take advantage of a more permissive society and contain themes that help us to understand the sexual politics of the time. To what extent this icon of avant-garde European cinema may be considered a 'Robbe-Grillet' film, and how it prepared him for the rest of his film-making career, is also discussed.
