This chapter focuses on two cases, Lucrecia Martel and Isabel Coixet, which are exceptionally rare: female auteurs who have not only established a substantial body of work but who also lay claim to transnational reach. It turns to reviews first published in Sight & Sound of co-productions by Martel and Coixet that exemplify the complex but productive tensions: between art and commerce, location and flow. In La ciénaga, Martel presented a cinema of languor, left the great questions of birth, love and death go unanswered, and created a truly distinctive cinematic atmosphere, as allusive as it is elusive. Coixet has said that each film has its geography and My Life Without Me could only have been set and shot in Canada, with its particular sense of emotional and spatial distance.
