Histories under the sign of the feminine, pre- and post- the Portuguese revolution of 1974

This chapter is devoted to an analysis of how gender, memory and history overlap and interact in the revisioning enacted by the films (Costa dos murmurios, Margarida Cardoso) and by (Capitaes de Abril, Maria de Medeiros). The significance of both these films, among many others directed by Portuguese women, is that both revisit and review the discourse scaffolding the main pillars of modern Portuguese national identity: the revolution of 1974 and the end of the colonial wars. The historical period under focus and being 'seen' is particularly relevant in terms of the struggle for gender equality, as women's liberation is intrinsically linked to the democratic revolution of April 1974. The feminine gaze undermines not only the ideological and violent constructs, identified with the masculine, but also the existence of the pre-formatted concepts of history and revolution, which it both exposes and confronts.
