Heroines of cross-cultural social protest
Marie-Line and Chaos
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

This chapter analyses two feature films, made since the sans-papiers social protest began, which are critically concerned with the place of undocumented immigrant women in the French and, indeed, the wider economy. Mehdi Charef's Marie-Line focuses on a multi-ethnic team of women night cleaners working for a company run by members of the Front National, while Coline Serreau's Chaos features a young beur woman prostitute working for a vice ring run by men of indeterminate central European origin. These two films thus demonstrate a courageous commitment to both feminism and anti-racism through the unusual tropes of feminist heroines and cross-cultural inter-ethnic sisterhood. The possibilities of action and change in relation to prejudices and inequalities in contemporary multicultural France are articulated in Marie-Line and Chaos through the establishment of common ground between white women and ethnic minority women.
