This concluding essay underscores the importance to establish French modernism as a critical category and posits a series of suggestions for a productive scholarly discussion on the topic: to move beyond the national paradigm, to work with the cutting edge concepts of ‘modernity/modernism’ based on circulation and networks, to incorporate the new transnationalism, thinking beyond the hexagon to include French colonies, post-colonies and parts of the world where French as the lingua franca has been culturally significant, to avoid reproducing the old canon through a systematic inclusion of women and other marginalized artists, and to use the most current methods of cultural study where relevant.
