This short, final chapter reflects on what the book has uncovered. It discusses a remarkable photograph taken by Raymonde Bonnetain, reproduced here and on the front cover, and the different readings and reactions that it can support. To understand such an image requires an analysis that encompasses all aspects of the photograph, from the initial moment of its creation to its numerous circulations and reinventions. The chapter goes on to consider the images that are missing from the photographic record of violence, as well as the power of photography to distort our sense of time. It finishes by observing that both Britain and France continue to favour a sanitised perspective on their colonial pasts.
