Prophecies of war and peace
Spiritualism and the new millennium

The first chapter offers a new history of spiritualism and psychical research from the 1870s to 1939. This chapter uses prophecies of war and peace to highlight the importance of faith in progress and the role of pacifism and millennialism within the movement. It sets the contours for the rest of the book by arguing that there is a history of spiritualism and psychical research that is specific to the era of the Great War. This history was centred around the conviction that the war would usher in a spiritual awakening, unite science and religion and end human conflict. The outbreak of a Second World War shattered these hopes and foreshadowed how the supernormal explanation for the Great War would be viewed over time.
