A psychic laboratory
Numinous experiences and spiritualism on the Great War’s battlefields
Abstract only

This chapter argues against the idea that the war experience was profane, noting the existence of a vibrant supernormal culture on the Great War’s battlefields. It clarifies the extent (or lack thereof) of spiritualist practices on the battlefields while demonstrating how a broader turn to the sacred and supernatural was mobilised by spiritualists and psychical researchers to support their views on the war. At the centre of this chapter are the war experiences of Will R. Bird, who in 1930 published his psychic experiences to criticise the modernist writers, but who in 1968 largely removed these details from his book to accommodate changing memories of the war.
