Perversions at her adolescent fingertips, or, Francesca Woodman’s autoerotic attentions
An essay-caress
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

Alice Butler’s essay is a sensuously unfolding love letter in which she explores the textiles-filled autoeroticism of Francesca Woodman’s late photographic ‘attempts’ to reimagine the caress – as perverse desire, pleasure, discipline, and genre – as a form of feminist essay. Butler gets as close as possible to her subject matter, writing Woodman’s photographic praxis from the intimate vantage point of the sisterly: of one who is beside.
