This chapter sets out Miller’s approach to education and how he established a distinctive sociological pedagogy along pragmatist lines, including sociology as a form of ‘publicity’. Miller’s teaching career was lengthy and exhibited a high degree of continuity in his interests. He was affiliated with noteworthy educational institutions in the US, ranging from the Ivy League to historically Black colleges and progressive liberal experiments. Throughout, he was a prolific public speaker for various political and practical causes, predominantly related to anti-nationalism, race issues, immigration and international relations. We also show how Miller’s extensive public and political engagements for various causes (political problems of Central Europe, Korea, southeast Asia and India) were consistent with his pedagogic programme that underscored his commitment to the practical application of knowledge. In all these contexts, he showed interest in the dialectic of oppression and freedom, and revolutions against domination, particularly when it involved one racialised group claiming superiority over another. The chapter explores his classroom practices, which included site visits to various sociologically significant locations. We suggest that Miller’s interpretation of sociology’s purpose, in relation to education, citizenship and progressive politics, contributed to diminishing his role and status in American sociology during a period of heightened professionalisation.
