Motherhood on network television, 1940s to 1980s
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

This chapter argues that a look at the history of mothers between the 1940s to the 1980s on network television reveals much about the power of the relationship between the mother’s role in the home and her fictional representation. While the mothers under scrutiny here often appear in sitcoms, it is the representation of mothers, their cultural and political context and how that is steeped in 1950s nostalgia that is of interest here.
