Chapter 6, ‘Notice to Quit’, brings the story of the domestic dwelling lodger and householder to a close, as it explores the lives of householders and lodgers as they move on from the domestic dwelling lodging arrangement. Alongside the impact of death, Chapter 6 focuses on the legality of ejecting a lodger. Despite the often informal appearance of the arrangements made between working-class householders and lodgers throughout the book, there is evidence of a clear understanding between the two parties of the need to terminate the relationship through serving notice to quit. In establishing this, Chapter 6 demonstrates a formality in the householder-lodger relationship and expectations surrounding behaviour that often left householders more vulnerable than their lodgers.
