Social anthropology at Manchester and the study of modernity
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

In 1949 Manchester’s Department of Anthropology and Sociology was established: for the University, anthropology was not just a discipline that analysed ‘traditional’ societies, but one that could contribute to ideas about urban, industrial life. While the department’s first head, Max Gluckman, had built his career in a colonial context, at Manchester the appeal of anthropology was that it offered a new perspective that could also be applied to local issues, including labour relations and social mobility. In the 1950s and 1960s, Manchester anthropologists would pioneer studies of modern communities, primarily in Britain itself, but also in southern Africa and Israel.
