In 2024 the University of Manchester celebrates its bicententary. Manchester minds marks this occasion with a collection of essays exploring the University as a site of intellectual exchange over two centuries. This was the place where the idea of the civic university was born, and the essays are centrally concerned with how University and city interacted to generate new ideas. The book balances discovery with public controversy. Some chapters reinterpret high-profile episodes – the politics of Zionism, the birth of the computer, Brian Cox and science communication – others focus on uncovering quirkier or unduly forgotten stories. The book brings together a wide range of contributors from within the University and beyond. Manchester minds offers a new angle on university history, and a fresh approach to the history of ideas.
