This chapter examines the role and responsibility of the Cypriot media in presenting, representing and reproducing the Cyprus conflict. It selects a specific case study: the media coverage in the two communities of the opening of the Ledra/Lokmaci gate in Nicosia. Through a detailed analysis of this news story, media operators in both communities are depicted as strongly – and perhaps inevitably – embedded actors in the conflict, articulating rather than challenging conflict-enhancing discourses. On the one hand, media operators are driven by the specific political and economic incentives underpinning the media industry, which prioritises immediacy, simplicity and sensationalism over incrementalism, complexity and moments of cooperation. On the other hand, the media and especially the local media in conflict situations are part and parcel of the existing structures sustaining conflict.
