Starting with an overview of the main dimensions displayed by conflicts, and identified in the literature, this chapter locates the Cyprus conflict among other conflicts taking place in Europe, and assesses its specificities as well as the features it shares with other cases. It subsequently focuses on the impact of European integration on the structures of the conflict itself, going beyond the question of the political implications of membership, and inquiring whether it has led to a shift in its key issues and dimensions. The chapter concentrates on the main possible issues or 'symptoms' of current conflicts in Europe, as identified in the scientific literature, and classifies them in four main clusters (cultural factors, socio-economic and territorial factors, political factors, and external factors). Comparing Cyprus with other cases of conflict thus sheds light on its very specific current evolution.
