This chapter analyses parts from a pioneering study of women's experiences, voices and desires in all Cypriot communities – Greek, Turkish, Armenian, Maronite and Latin. It unravels the complexity of Cypriot women's voices and thus challenges the 'bicommunality' discourse. The discussion largely builds on data and prevalent themes from focus group discussions in each community held in 2003. One of the general findings demonstrates that the women from all Cypriot communities find themselves in a transitional context, where modernity and traditionalism are mixed in both the private and the public realms of their lives. The chapter concentrates on the themes of women and their self-definition, and issues of discrimination and violence. Representative quotes from each ethnic group are given, as these highlight the bigger theme of the chapter, the crossroads between traditionalism and modernity.
