Shocked and awed
The convergence military and media discourse

This chapter builds on the Daya Kishan Thussu's research in order to delve into the symbiotic relationship that exists between the media and the military. It argues that the US government exploited a convergence of media and military discourse that is constitutive of the political field. The chapter also argues that spectacular narrative forms deployed by the US military, such as 'Shock and Awe', and the 'Saving of Pvt. Jessica Lynch', are constitutive of the mediated political field. It then argues that the administration of George W. Bush enjoyed an enormous amount of political success packaging and selling the America-led invasion of Iraq under the rubric of the 'War on Terror' narrative by making deft use of those resources. News media organisations worked to promote the Bush administration's plans to invade Iraq not because they were pressured by the White House, but because the media and military shared converged interests.
