Global solidarity and the communications revolution - resisting state and capital
Abstract only
Log-in for full text

This chapter situates the Movements for Global Social Justice in the context of the communications revolution embodied in new forms of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It illustrates the significance of this movement, to examine the ways in which ICT is essential to its mode of organisation, and in particular to focus upon the way in which the Seattle protests helped to galvanise and define their identity, leading to the emergence of the World Social Forum. The chapter sets out an analysis of the movement before looking at the way in which it was formed in the moment of the World Trade Organisation ministerial meeting in Seattle. It considers the significance of Indymedia (alternatively know as Independent Media Centre or IMC) and its contribution to the movement, while also examining its ability to challenge state and capital.
