This chapter explores the formal, stylistic and also ideological parameters of the 'dramaturgic Regie'. It describes Leopold Jessner's Regie as inducing theatral play through effects of 'plasticity'. The concept of plasticity characterises Hegelian dialectic thinking. It is, precisely, the dialectic thinking of Jessner's Regie that reveals itself in his explicit commitment to the playwright's work in the very face of his own radical 'actualisations' of their plays. As a blueprint for Regietheater, Jessner's approach was characterised by that central paradox of Regie: he was ultimately committed to what he called, throughout the various stages of his career the 'idea of the play' or its 'central motif '. In his thought-through dramaturgic Regie with its commitment to a close study of the play's Grundmotiv, Jessner never relied on superficial updating or random associations.
