As far as the modern food economy is concerned, the willingness of retailers to respond and adapt to consumer preferences should not be underestimated. European consumers' distrust of GMOs has elicited an unmistakable response from major food retailers throughout Europe. In the case of the major food scandals, scares and crises discussed in this book, the risk politics of the food economy has been shaped by happenings that give every appearance of being well beyond control. However, in order to exercise a greater degree of choice than people have now, they need to be much more prepared and much better equipped to act with our fellow citizens to shape risk politics.
