This concluding chapter briefly summarises some of the main strands of Ondaatje criticism. It identifies several themes that appear in the discussions of his early poetry, and discusses the critical responses to the six works which were studied in the previous chapters. The chapter stresses that one tends to miss the meaning of Ondaatje's work when they try to account for it within a ‘postcolonial’ or ‘postmodern’ framework. Finally, the chapter determines that most of Ondaatje's best writing is motivated by his desire to take a step back from the everyday world and reflect on the differences of which it is composed.
