Labour segmentation and precariousness in Spain
Theories and evidence

The official explanation of high unemployment rates in Spain focus on the rigidity of the labour market using the most simplistic version of segmentation: the insiders-outsiders model. In this chapter we present alternative lines of analysis based on the heterodox view developed by Jill Rubery and other members of the International Working Party on Labour Market Segmentation. From our point of view unemployment is a macroeconomic problem generated by the normal functioning of capitalism and labour market segmentation is in part a product of company policies. We discuss how this debate has materialised in Spain, and how the empirical evidence vindicates the heterodox approach.
