Latin America

In this chapter, a 'broad picture' approach is adopted to discuss the efforts to conceptualize democracy and democratization in Latin America. Latin America raises issues concerning democratic consolidation and might be expected to teach people more about that aspect than any countries in, say, Africa. The chapter discusses different ideas or approaches that can be detected in the literature on democratic consolidation in Latin America. All these approaches can be subjected to the key question of how people can know whether a democracy is consolidated or not. The chapter answers this question. When most countries in the region adopted market reforms, these became the main focus of discussion. Today, this kind of approach has evolved into a literature on the relationship to be expected between market-oriented reform (or globalization) and democracy.
