The Greens
From idealism to pragmatism (1984–2002)

This chapter explores how the Greens had tried to maintain a coherent identity while facing up to the new responsibilities which have recently been placed at their feet. By carrying out an independent campaign or by participating in more or less ephemeral alliances, they had gradually mastered their electoral technique. The radical vision might have allowed the Greens to occupy their own niche in political space and, despite their marginality, to hide a thin manifesto demonstrative of its ideological weaknesses. This approach became more and more contested by those with a more pragmatic view of political action. The Greens had ceased to be a marginal and idealistic member of the party system and had become an important partner within the gauche plurielle. The Green electorate was very close to the party membership in terms of its sociological profile.
