Bibliography

Primary sources

Archival, digital, and Wikileaks documents are cited by original reference number so that future research can retrace my steps. Citations of archival documents begin with a brief descriptive name (‘Memorandum from D’Argenlieu to COMINDO’), followed by the date (British format, day/month/year) and its original archive reference. All translations from French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are my own. The below breakdown of sources includes primarily archival as well as open-source data.

Archives

Archives Diplomatiques du Ministère des Affaires Étrangeres (MAE), Rue de La Courneuve, Paris

Fonds États Associés The collection was in process of migration with a temporary system in place for computer-based requests and recalls when I visited in June 2014. The old system (as found in Tonnesson, Marr and Lawrence) was classified according to Fond/Theme/Date range, like so: Fonds EA /II/A. Fonds EA I refers to the Vichy Forces in Indochina during WWII; II refers to Free French and French Republic affairs 44–48; III is 48 to 54. Within each theme and chronological section, there are divisions by date ranges: A: January 1944 – 6 March 1946, B: 6 March 1946 – 19 December 1946, C: 20 December 1946 – 30 June 1948.

Documents are cited with currently usable MAE box numbers under ‘Fond EA’ following the new classification and box number like so: ‘174QO.18, Fond EA, MAE’. The archive has produced a table of equivalences between the coexisting old and new systems so as to be able to correspond old and new references.

Communication avec les États-Unis This is principally on microfilm, so in addition to the MAE reference number I add the film number, as they do not correspond in the least to shelf or recall numbers, in the format: ‘Film 4714, 91QO.124, MAE’.

Archives Nationales, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Paris

Bidault Presidential papers collection (AN fond 457AP)

Documents cited as: ‘Detail of document’+author title_author surname+ ref. For instance: Memorandum 26/4/1946 by Haut-Comissaire D’Argenlieu, AP127, fond 457AN’.

D’Argenlieu private collection (AN fond 517AP)

This is seldom cited as most papers found of relevance were replicated in the Sainteny and Bidault collections, which were made available to me months earlier, since the D’Argenlieu collection, though deposited at the Archives Nationales, is still privately curated and permission must be individually requested and explained. Cited as per Bidault fund.

Archives d’Autre-Mer, Aix en Provence

Ranges consulted include Collections Indochine et Hanoi.

For diplomatic papers, since many were copied in the MAE, I preferentially cite the latter version.

Archive Historique Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques, Paris

Fond Sainteny (aka Archive Sainteny).

Cited as ‘document name’+date+SAbox number, photos as ‘Archive Sainteny’.

I must thank the archive of our Parisian sister institute, better known as Sciences-Po, for the absolute trust and availability of Madame Parcollet, the archivist, who simply gave me all the boxes at once and let me have free rein over them for over a week, including photos featured in this book.

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

State Department Diplomatic communication and telegrams in Record Group 59 (State Department), particularly file ranges under G51 (France) and subsequent series under G51 and a letter, each of which refers to a French colony.

Cited as per original NARA reference: ‘“Memorandum XXX”, 851G.00/7–2646, RG59, NARA’. Document dates are included in original NARA reference – in the example here (7–2646) it’s the 26th July 1946, so they are omitted from my citations. ‘Conversation’ refers to ‘Memorandum of Conversation’; ‘Memorandum’ refers to office-produced analysis, summary, and abridged communications memoranda; and ‘Mission name to State’ or vice versa denote cables and airmail and diplomatic pouch dispatches.

Posters and maps archive at NARA

CIA Declassified Records: CIA Records Search Tool (CREST)

https://www.cia.gov/readingroom/collection/crest-25-year-program-archive, accessed 16 October 2024.

Ranges include 1945–54 on SEA and FE affairs/ 1975–89 on North and West African records.

The entire archive is digital but cannot be browsed; it is only searchable by keyword and date. Performed using searches for Vietminh, Vietnam, Cochinchine, Tonkin, Annam, Bao Dai, Ho Chi Minh/POLISARIO, El Ouali, Western Sahara, Morocco, Sahara Occidental, Sahara Marocain, to guide file identification. Methodological backtracking developed in this book was applied. Cited using original CIA declassification number (a condition of using this archive is to cite using these long declassification document ID numbers), as: ‘short description of document’, date/date/date, CIA-RDP 00-L00000NGDECLASSIF1CATI000NNUMBER-00, CREST.

Available at http://www.wikileaks.org (not a reliable website, I had my own copy of the entire collection of cables), and also as fully searchable texts at https://cablegatesearch.wikileaks.org/search.php. All the Wikileaks cables cited can be found on that website using the original State department reference (e.g. 05RABAT458). Cited by date (day and month in British format) and original State Department reference number (which includes year and station of origin) in the format: ‘3/12, 05RABAT458’. In this example, ‘RABAT’ indicates a cable from Rabat Embassy to State Department. For State department cables to stations, destination is indicated.
