Even if academic work can be a solitary endeavour, there is often a network of people who sustain and support us. First of all, I would like to thank the interviewees who generously agreed to discuss with me their different experiences with breast cancer as patients, medical professionals and researchers. Their help has been invaluable.

I have had the opportunity to follow my interest in breast cancer through a research project conducted at the CERMES3 laboratory and the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, with funding from the Cancéropôle Île-de-France. During this project I learned much from Ilana Löwy. I am grateful for her thoughtfulness, encouragement and understanding. My colleagues at CERMES3 also provided me with a space for stimulating discussions and a friendly community, and I thank them for that. I have also had the opportunity to conduct research at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM) of the University of Manchester, with funding from the British Academy (grant number NF161448) and the Wellcome Trust (grant number 212736/Z/18/Z). Carsten Timmermann has been a great support in both projects. My colleagues at CHSTM, with whom I have discussed and laughed, have significantly improved my life in the UK.

The Remaking Cancer project, which Carsten Timmermann, Elizabeth Toon and I co-founded, has also been an important resource for discussions within humanities and social sciences applied to cancer.

I would further like to thank Des Fitzgerald and Amy Hinterberger as series editors of Inscriptions, Shannon Kneis and Laura Swift for their editorial work at Manchester University Press and the anonymous reviewers of the book proposal and the manuscript. Their advice and guidance have been essential.

During this time, I have been very fortunate to meet several colleagues with whom I have shared insights, discussions, ideas and, in many cases, drafts of articles and chapters. A non-exhaustive list includes: Ignacia Arteaga, Grazia De Michele, Fatima Elfitouri, Corinne Fortier, Sarah Gibbon, Nils Graber, Maica Gugolati, Natasia Hamarat, Robert Kirk, Cynthia Kraus, Anne Lovell, Lenore Manderson, Anastasia Meidani, Pascale Molinier, Neil Pemberton, Ana Porroche Escudero, Linda Sifer-Rivière, Gayle Sulik, Julia Swallow, Stephanie Snow, Elizabeth Toon, Bernadette Wegenstein and Duncan Wilson.

During this time my colleagues on the editorial team of Anthopologie & Santé have provided me with several occasions for scholarly and friendly discussions and have taught me about the great deal of editorial work behind every academic publication.

My parents, my mother in particular, my grandmothers and my aunts have always helped and supported me. I would not be here without the sacrifices and efforts of the older members of my family, who fought for the rights of working-class children to receive an education.

Last but not least, this book is for Djordje. Thank you for everything.
