Acknowledgements

This book has been a long time coming and there are many people to thank, not least our own families and friends who encouraged us to keep going. Cynthia Enloe first planted the seed in 2008, providing encouragement and inspiration over many years. We are also indebted to Catherine Lutz and Rachel Woodward for their work and for helping us secure funding for the project at critical times. Paul Dixon has been an important interlocutor from the very start. We would like to acknowledge support from the Leverhulme Trust which allowed us to begin the fieldwork in 2018 and continue into the pandemic.

Thanks to Matthew Flintham, Melanie Friend and Patrick Wright for ongoing conversations on the military-pastoral and to Paul Gilroy for kestrel-eyed research skills. Colin Leys provided prompt and exacting editing advice at the time when it mattered, proving an indispensable reader. Lucia Trimbur and Luke de Noronha guided us through the ethics of collective writing. We are grateful to the MUP production team, especially John Banks and Don Shewan.

Ross McGarry provided expert academic advice as a reviewer. Tariq Jazeel, Adam Elliot-Cooper, Maren Elfert, Tom Sykes, Francis Dodsworth and Egle Rindzeviciute provided valuable opportunities to present the research at UCL, Warwick University, QMUL, KCL, Portsmouth University and Kingston University and Harriet Gray, Marsha Henry and Alex Hyde shared early insights at the Gender Studies Dept, LSE. Anthony Barnett and the late, much-missed Rosemary Bechler at openDemocracy provided space to explore contemporary militarisation. Thanks to Joe Glenton, Rhianna Louise and Emma Sangster at Forces Watch and Jinsella at Demilitarise Education for the podcasts. In fact there are many dedicated people whose research and expertise have provided an indispensable collective resource: not least DeclassifiedUK, Action on Armed Violence, Scientists for Global Responsibility and the Conflict and Environment Observatory. Mitra would like to thank Dhakal Lohani and Phauda Limbu for their help with research in Tidworth, and David Gellner and Dhan Bahadur Sarki for support of all kinds during the entire period of his research.

This project would not have been possible without the initial support of Sir Freddie Viggers and Brigadier (Rtd) Mark Abraham, who bear the responsibility for opening the door, although not for this particular outcome. We are also grateful to Wiltshire County councillors serving the communities in Tidworth, Ludgershall and Larkhill. We owe particular thanks to Cllr Chris Williams, Mike Giles, Tony Pickernell and Lt Col Jamie Balls MBE and his predecessor, the late Lt Col Richard Carman, for their time and patience.

We have made efforts to protect the identity of interviewees on principle, although we acknowledge that some individuals may remain identifiable. With the exception of some local public figures, all names have been changed. However, we are grateful to all of those who took the time to speak to us, including: Guy Benson, Richard Brooks, Lt Col R. S. Clayton, Bill Dowling, Sally Hunter, Major Nigel Lewis, Rick Kavanagh, Kevin Ladner, Richard Osgood, Allan Thomson, Kate Viggers, Bruce Waight and Stephen West. We would also like to acknowledge the helpful steers we received from Carole Rudd, Katherine Houlston and Emma Long (Army Families Federation) and Matt Stevens (Hawk Conservancy).

Thanks to John Chandler, Martin Curtis and the Imberbus Team for allowing us to use for extra material and images, and to Francis Ware for last-minute image editing.
