Acknowledgements

We would like to acknowledge the following organisations, institutions and people for their role in helping us produce The Simons of Manchester. We firstly express our gratefulness to the Simon Fund whose financial sponsorship made it possible for us to produce this book. We are also grateful to the John Rylands Research Institute for supporting our research. Furthermore, we would like to thank the staff at Manchester University Press, especially Emma Brennan and Humairaa Dudhwala, for enabling us to create this volume.

We are also very appreciative of the help we received from the descendants of the Simons of Manchester – Margaret Simon, Matilda Simon, Helen David and Andrew Simon – when writing this booking. Andrew was a fount of information on the Simon family, and Margaret and Helen kindly provided us with privileged access to private family papers as well as permission to include previously unseen family photos in the book. Margaret was also particularly hospitable in letting us study these items at her home. Much of the project relied on material held by Manchester Central Library and the University of Manchester Library Special Collections. We would therefore like to thank the archivists and curators at Archives+ at the Central Library and those at the John Rylands and the University of Manchester Main Libraries for affording us the vital access to the historic documents we needed. Among the many people who kindly assisted us from these institutions, we would like to highlight the help afforded to us by John Hodgson, Janette Martin, Karen Jacques and the imaging team at the John Rylands. We would also like to thank these bodies for their permission to use images relating to the Simon family held in their respective archive collections.

A number of other people provided the editorial team with excellent additional assistance. Beyond contributing to our volume, Margaret Littler, Charlotte Wildman and Brendon Jones generously provided useful feedback on draft chapters and ideas regarding the scope of the book. We also wish to convey our thanks to Sue and Paul Good, and Rosemary Eshel who gave us access to unique historical sources and information. Furthermore, we also are grateful to Christian Klein for his role in allowing us to display his image of the Deutsche Reichsregentschaft seal held by the Bundestag in the book. Finally, additional thanks are due to the following people for the extra help we received from them: Neil Humphrey and Gillian Whitworth, Ingrid Holden and Libby Edwards, Imogen Allen and Benjamin Clare, David Leitch, Rachael Evans, Stephen Parker, Matthew Jefferies, Eva-Maria Broomer and Graham Dilliway.
