Writing a book is a journey that cannot be accomplished alone. The co-authoring of this book has taken us on a truly collective journey, bringing not only academic insights but also lifelong friendships. We learned and laughed together, discussed and debated, explored and engaged, talked and travelled. Many precious memories will prevail.

We want to acknowledge the many individuals and institutions that have supported this journey and contributed in various ways to the research.

First and foremost, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the students, scholars and practitioners who have dedicated their lives to the study and pursuit of just peace. Your insights, expertise and commitment have inspired and guided the ideas presented in this book.

Furthermore, we are deeply indebted to all the persons in Cyprus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Rwanda and South Africa who over the years have been willing to share their experiences, stories and perspectives of living in the aftermath of war and violence. Thank you for enriching the narrative and deepening our understanding of the complexities of peace and the politics of memory.

An earnest thanks for research support in South Africa goes to Damian Samuels, Steven Kuo, Lisa Linossi, Ruth Murambadoro and Chenai Matshaka. In Cyprus we would extend our deepest thanks to our colleagues Professors Yannis Papadakis, Maria Hadjipavlou, Costas Constantinou, Rebecca Bryant, Mete Hatay and Ahmet Sözen and to the persons that shared their insights into Cyprus’ stalled peace process in interviews and conversations. For invaluable input during the research process in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we thank Danijela Dugandžić, Lejla Somun and Dženita Pašić. In Cambodia, our deepest thanks go to Kum Somaly, Tann Boravin, Keo Duong, Chhay Visoth and the staff at Tuol Sleng, Chhang Youk and the staff at DC-Cam, Soy Kimsan and the staff at CSHL, Jan Reinermann, Steffen Siegle, Theresa de Langis, Helen Jarvis, Ali Al-Nasani and Robert Cutler. In Rwanda, our thanks go to various individuals and organisations whose anonymity we have decided to keep.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the funders of this research Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) and The Swedish Research Council who have generously supported our work. Their resources have provided the necessary foundation for the research and writing process.

We would also like to acknowledge the support and encouragement of our academic institutions: Durham University, Lund University, Center for Conflict Studies at Philipps University Marburg, The Swedish Institute of International Affairs (UI), Södertörn University and University of the Bundeswehr Munich. Our sincere appreciation goes to our colleagues and friends who have provided insightful feedback and engaged in stimulating discussions throughout the development of this book. Your enthusiasm and critical thinking have been instrumental in shaping the final product. In particular, we are grateful to Aniela Jesse, Yaas Bahmani and Gunda Menrad for their research assistance.

We also thank the editorial team at Manchester University Press for their professionalism and expertise in bringing this book to fruition. Their guidance and meticulous attention to detail have been invaluable in the publication process.

Finally, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our families for being there for us with love and encouragement. Their support has been the cornerstone of this joint journey.
